The Minority Africa Fellowship is a project that aims to provide journalists and storytellers from minority groups all over Africa with a platform, the skills necessary to report stories from and about their communities, as well as mentorship. Minority Africa is a digital publication that uses data-driven multimedia journalism to tell the stories of African minorities.

Fellows will hone their existing reporting abilities both from a technical and thematic point of view through the course of an intensive, compensated program that lasts for six months. In addition, fellows will receive training on the intersecting topics and people that are the focus of the fellowship. This means that fellows are taught, and graduate from the fellowship understanding, how to cover organizations that are not immediately affiliated with the communities to which they belong.

Application Deadline: 30th January 2023.

Eligible Countries: African countries

Type: Fellowship

Number of Awards: Not Mentioned

Duration of Award: 6 months

Value of Award:

Fellows will be paid a monthly allowance, and receive an internet stipend, and intra-country travel related to the coverage of stories will be covered by Minority Africa.

During the fellowship, fellows will be familiarized with editorial guidelines of Minority Africa and will work and report on stories for publication. They are paired with external mentors, work with editors in the newsroom, and are required to produce at least two stories every month.

By the end of the program, each fellow would have published 12 stories on Minority Africa. These stories will be a blend of reported multimedia features as well as opinions and analysis. The program is entirely virtual and the first cohort runs from May to October 2023.

Recommended:  2023 The Peel Trust Studentship at Lancaster University, UK
